PSYCHOLOGICAL IMBALANCES
According to Dr. Russell Barkley, an internationally renowned clinical psychologist, a child is born with more than 400 faculties of consciousness that may unfold throughout life. Faculties of consciousness are mental abilities such as thinking, wishing, and remembering.
Faculties of consciousness may develop well, remain underdeveloped, or become overdeveloped. For example, if the mind lacks vitality, symptoms of depression may arise. If the mind has an excess of energy, signs of ADHD may appear.
Almost every day, our faculties of consciousness get out of balance. Sad news may trouble us for two or three days. A joyful expectation may keep us awake at night. In the case of a traumatic experience, it may take weeks, months, or years for the mind to regain stability. And when the memory of trauma intensifies the trauma, therapy may be necessary.
In ABT, we avoid terms such as mental disorder or mental illness. Instead, we view so-called psychological disorders (with the exception of psychotic disorders) as symptoms of mental imbalances.
PHYSICAL IMBALANCES
Just as faculties of consciousness can get out of balance, bodily functions can also become imbalanced. For example, if the immune system is weakened, cancer may develop. If the immune system becomes overactive, symptoms of an autoimmune disease may show.
To restore physical balance through meditation, we make use of the placebo or psychosomatic effect—the power of consciousness over the body. AIT meditations focus and amplify the psychosomatic effect to help restore physical balance.
